#MasqueSundays: Pangea Organics Japanese Matcha Tea Acai Goji Berry Facial Mask

Pangea Organics may have started off with a few homemade barsoaps, but they have expanded into a full skincare line that includes moisturizers, toners, eye cream, facial masks and more. Pangea’s products are crafted in small batches, using organic and fair trade ingredients (love that!).

Thanks to Betty, @bettylovesorganic, a Pangea Organics Beauty Ecologist, I was fortunate enough to be able to sample a few products from the Pangea Organics line, which will come in a full review in a week or so, but TODAY, I will be reviewing the award-winning “Japanese Matcha Tea Acai Goji Berry Facial Mask”.

What is this mask?

pangea greentea mask

The Japanese Matcha Tea Acai Goji Berry Facial Mask, is a gluten-free and vegan treatment. The Matcha Tea, aka green tea, is chock full of antioxidants, which help to fight against free radicals, while brightening and evening your skin-tone. Actually, the mask includes three teas, which are all employed in both whole leaf and extract forms to ensure maximum potency for antioxidant, restorative and energizing effects.

Additionally, this mask also has Acai and Goji Berries. The Acai Berry is another antioxidant that has revitalizing, and skin protecting properties. The Goji Berry is also nutrient-rich antioxidant, and has anti-aging and skin rejuvenating benefits.

Moreover, the mask contains green and white clays that work together to restore, balance, cleanse and detoxify. The mask also contains four sea vegetables that re-mineralize, hydrate and oxygenate your skin. The jojoba and sunflower seed oils, as well as other essential oils, are found in the mask and further nourish and moisturize the skin.

Did I like the Mask?

matchamaskI applied and wore the mask for about 15-20 minutes, and I absolutely loved it. If you have ever blended seaweed (I feed my 9 month old Korean seaweed soup), that is sort of what the mask looks like. It is a green and white clay mask, but it does not have that typical texture. Rather, it feels like you are applying a scrub as opposed to a mask.

What I liked most about the mask, and how it differs from most masks I have used, is that the mask contains small little sugarcane beads that exfoliate your dead skin and unclog pores!  The sugarcane also supports the skin’s natural production of elastin and collagen. Thus, when you rinse off the mask, your skin feels baby soft!

The Matcha Tea mask is truly a staple to keep in your beauty arsenal, especially, before a big event when you need to prep your skin to allow for an even, smooth, and flawless make-up application.

Where can I get it?

The Japanese Matcha Tea Acai Goji Berry Facial Mask is $45 for 4 fl. oz. It is available on pangeaorganics.com. Or feel free to contact Betty, bettylovesorganic@gmail.com, and she may be able to send you a sample.

#MasqueSundays – Cel-Derma Ideal Radiance Hydrogel Mask

celdermaidealradiancehydrogelmaskseasonv

Two weeks ago, for #MasqueSundays, I treated myself to the Cel-Derma Ideal Radiance Hydrogel Mask,  aka the Hayumi Mask. Apparently, this is the #1 selling facemask in Korea. This mask promises to:

  • Diminish wrinkles
  • Firms skin/lifting
  • Recovers skin barriers/pore care
  • Increase moisturization/nourishment
  • Whitening/Brightening

What’s it like?

This facemask is clear (as opposed to white), and comes in two pieces. The instructions ask you to apply the pack’s top section over the center of eyes, and the bottom section over the center of mouth.

When you first open the package and slide of the mask, you are immediately confronted with the slimy and gooey Hydrogel, which this facemask is so known for. The hydrogel is supposed to be temperature-activated and water-soluble. Basically, the heat from your skin allows the hydrogel to, essentially, melt into your skin, and all the beneficial ingredients, too. When you put the mask on, it feels like it is sucked to your face.

celdermajen

Did it work?

I really enjoyed this mask. The clear material the mask is made out of is really cool and innovative. After the application, my face definitely felt cool, moist, and firm after the mask. My skin did look slighting brighter after, too. However, I didn’t see any diminishing of wrinkles, although, maybe with increased usage I would. Additionally, I liked how the Hydrogel helps the mask to stay in place, which was a nice change to the usual readjusting I have to do with some masks.

Would I recommend it?

I would recommend this mask to anyone interested in trying in trying a new type of facemask. I would rate this mask a 4/5 because it delivered all that it promised, except, diminished wrinkles.

#MasqueSundays – Psy Ceramide Sheet Mask

Everybody needs to take time out to pamper themselves a little bit! It is hard with our busy schedules, but if you mark a certain time once a week, or every two weeks, or even once a month, your soul will thank you! Last night I gave myself 20 minutes 😉 I put on my silly Psy Ceramide Sheet Mask, marked my timer, and hung out with hubby, and watched “Swamp Pawn” >_< He’s very much into shows relating to the swamp….#duckdynasty #swamppeople…you know… lolz

The mask was pretty impressive. It had a light, perfume-y scent. Definitely not overpowering, at all. It was felt fresh, and cool on my just washed skin. Actually, my skin was feeling a bit drier than usual, and so I was looking forward to the ceramide’s hydrating effects.

What is Ceramide?

First, our outer most layer  = epidermis, and the top layer of the epidermis = stratum corneum (SC). The SC is super thin, but is super important as it is the main barrier of the skin. It keeps chemicals that come in contact with the skin from absorbing into the body, and it keeps water inside the skin from leaching out.

The SC contains three types of lipids– ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. These lipids have different chemical compositions and different functions throughout the body. There are nine different types of ceramides in the SC, conveniently named ceramide 1 through ceramide 9, and they account for 40-50% of the lipids in this outermost layer.

And……

Scientists have learned that people with eczema have significantly fewer ceramides in their SC. So, low ceramides = dry skin!

Don’t worry! Replacing Ceramides Improves Dry Skin!!!

Recent studies have shown that lipids can be replaced with topical preparations. Interestingly, all three lipids have to be replaced at a certain ratio to restore the barrier function of the skin. If the incorrect balance of lipids is applied, it actually takes longer for the skin to heal.photo-3

So did the mask work?

Well, my skin was dry and irritated before the mask. After the mask, my skin felt soft, plump, and moisturized! I hope it had the correct lipid ratio….I’ll have to ask my hubby to reread the label to me….lolz

Indulging in Goa’s Detox Facial Cleanser & Mask

Goa is a new luxury skincare label. It is 100% natural and organic (my fav things).  One of the Goa lines, India Gold, features a Green Tea Detox Facial Cleanser and Mask. The formula contains amino acids and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, and E. It also contains ginseng, cinnamon, and  ginger essential oils, and witch hazel. So, it has antiseptic and toxin-banishing components.

I’ve been using the cleanser for about a week (you can tell from my picture)and tried the mask on last night. The cleanser is very gentle, but packs a punch of benefits. It does not leave your skin tight or dry. The texture is thick and smells super luxurious. After using the cleanser in my shower, my skin was super soft. I was even able to use this cleaner while using my Adapalene gel.

What’s great about this product is that it is a 2-in-1, you get a cleanser AND a mask. When I used the formula as a mask, I drew myself a bath, and left the solution on for 10 minutes. I got a little aromatherapy session with the ginger and cinnamon essential oils — super relaxing. After the mask, my face looks glowy and energized.

Checkout the India Gold and all of Goa’s products at http://www.goacosmetics.com. You can request a sample, too! I hope you have a chance to try the facial cleanser and mask. I’d love to hear what you think!

Differin Gel: What I Wish My Dermatologist Would Have Told Me…

When my dermatologist prescribed Differin gel aka Adapalene, I thought, “Awesome! I’ll just put this on my face, and ‘Voila’  — I would be acne free.” I was incredibly wrong!

After two nights of applying Adapalene on my face, I began to break-out with cystic acne, my skin became super sensitive,  burned when I splashed my face with water, and the skin on my face began to peel. After experiencing these negative side effects, I did some research on the manufacturer’s website, WebMD, Google, Instagram, Youtube, etc. So, I want to share with you what I learned…

How does Differin Gel/Adapalene work?

Differin gel/adapalene is a type of synthetic retinoid. It is one of the mildest forms available. Retinoids help your skin slough off (or desquamate) dead skin cells at a more normal rate. Sloughing aka exfoliating your dead skin cells is beneficial in that the dead skin cells don’t bind together and clog your pores. When your pores aka oil ducts are clogged, you get acne! In general, retinoids, due to the sloughing off of your dead skin cells, have anti-acne and anti-aging benefits.

HELPFUL TIPS:

  1. USE AT NIGHTTIME. Only use the gel in the evening as part of your night time regimen.
  2. PEA-SIZE IS ALL YOU NEED. Use only a PEA-SIZE amount for your ENTIRE face. I like to squeeze out a pea-size onto my index finger, and then, lightly dab a little on both cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. Then, I spread it out evenly onto my face.
  3. START SLOWLY. Begin by using the gel every other night or every two nights for at least a week. Then, after a couple weeks, or when you skin starts to adapt, begin to slowly use it every night.
  4. AFTER APPLYING THE GEL, WAIT. Wait an hour after applying the gel to apply your serum and moisturizer. Generally, you are supposed to put on the gel as the first layer, before your serum or moisturizer. You are supposed to wait an hour so that the gel can be absorbed into the skin uninterrupted. However, if you have SENSITIVE skin, see number 5.
  5. BUFFER. Buffering allows the gel to work less aggressively. If your skin is extremely sensitive, you can put other layers of products to lessen the effects of the gel. For example, in my early weeks of using the gel, I liked to put on my evening facial serum, then my evening moisturizer, then  gel. Note: Serums and moisturizers should be put on at least 20 minutes after washing your face. Washing your face disrupts the protective barriers on your skin, and so it is best to allow your face to return to status quo. Other ways to buffer: A) Mix the gel with your moisturizer or serum, and then, apply. B) If you put the gel on as your first layer, put the serum or moisturizer on right away instead of waiting an hour.
  6. PURGING IS A NORMAL SIDE-EFFECT. Worsening of your acne aka purging is normal, but if you want to minimize purging, start off using the gel slowly. If you do purge, don’t pick at your pimples!! Let nature do its course, even if it looks terrible!
  7. AVOID THE SUN AND SUNLAMPS.  If you are going to be in the sun, use a high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen. I like to use Neutrogena Healthy Defense SPF 50+.
  8. NO WAXING. Avoid waxing in areas you use the gel, e.g. your entire face. Try threading instead 🙂
  9. AVOID HARSH TOPICALS. Avoid potentially irritating topical products, like medicated or abrasive soaps and cleansers and products with high concentrations of astringents or alcohol. For example, cleansers with tea tree oil should not be used in combination with Differin gel. Be careful when using other products containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid. Unless your face has adapted to a particular retinoid, in this case, Differin gel, it is best to not use the gel in conjunction with salicylic acid, AHA, BHA, etc.
  10. DIFFERNIN GEL MAKES YOUR FACE SENSITIVE. Avoid extreme weather conditions, like high winds or extreme cold to minimize irritation.
  11. DON’T STOP USING! Once you see results, you must continue to use Differin gel in order to continue seeing results and avoid future breakout.
  12. BE PATIENT! It takes at least a couple months to start notice results.

I hope you enjoyed this article. Please let me know how Differin gel or adapalene worked for you!

xo,

Ms. Healthy Face

Post-pregnancy Acne and My First Glimpse of Differn Gel aka Adapalene

Before I was pregnant with my first son, my acne treatment included using Benzaclin in the AM followed by moisturizer. Benzaclin has the power of two acne-fighting ingredients in one acne treatment – benzoyl peroxide and topical clindamycin. In the evening, I used a 3% benzoyl peroxide facial wash, Triaz, followed by moisturizer.  However, once I became pregnant I could not use those ingredients without harming my baby. My acne was terrible. My face erupted on my chin, and around my nose. Most of the break-outs on my chin were cystic acne and very painful.

After my first son was born, I was nursing and so, I thought I could not use any acne fighting chemicals. After nine months nursing, I became pregnant with my second son and so, the acne continued.

After my second son was born, I was over feeling depressed about my skin’s condition, and so, I made an appointment with my dermatologist to see what I could do with my acne. She prescribed me Differen gel or .1%.

I was so excited that I had taken a proactive approach with my acne, I used it every night. Although I only put a pea-size amount each night, my skin became very irritated, sensitive to everything, including, my moisturizer, and even water! I began to research Differen gel to see if other people had the same reactions, and if Differen gel worked for them. I found out many things I wish my dermatologist had told me…

This post is getting lengthy, so to see what I learned, stay tuned for my next post.
